PRESS RELEASE: The LGBT #PlanetAwards voting opens and explodes in just 3 days

The shortlist for the 2016 Ultimate Planet Awards has been announced. Voting is open until 10pm on 31 January 2016 and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in March 2016. This year we had 951 nominations placed by 195 people.

In 2014 the voting was open for 30 days. In that time 1,737 people cast their votes with voting coming in right up to the last day. This year the number of voters exceeded the 2014 number in the first three days. It is clear that the community believe in these awards and the sheer interest has resulted in the organisers needing to review their planned location for the awards ceremony and after party to be able to ensure that the space will be large enough to host all those interested in attending.

Unlike most of the awards for the LGBT community, these awards are different because they support, thank and highlight those working hard on the ground within the community. We acknowledge that the existing awards highlight large companies who are supporting LGBT rights, but that without the people within our community dedicating their time and energy, often voluntarily, there would be no community to support.

Naomi and Katie Bennett-Hall, co-Founders of the only LBQ grassroots awards in the UK said

"Once again these awards show how important it is to recognise the hard work many many LBQ (cis and trans) women put into making their community a better place. The Ultimate Planet Awards are a chance to celebrate every contribution that supports the LBQ community".

The Ultimate Planet Awards were created to recognise, thank and promote the hard work from dedicated grass roots event organisers, community members and community businesses who are committed to improving the lesbian, bi and queer scene for cis and trans women. Ultimate Planet are delighted to be able to show their love and to show the community's love and appreciation to all the women who work tirelessly to create a fun, safe, special scene and community for lesbian, bi and queer women in London, Brighton and beyond.

The 2014 Ultimate Planet Awards were so successful and Katie and Naomi were delighted by the enthusiasm and response from within the community. The awards ceremony event, dubbed the "Lesbian Oscars" was completely sold out with around 200 attendees from within the LBQ community. The hashtag #LesbianOscars was used throughout the run up to the event, during and after and created a real and sustained buzz within the LGBT community and media. The event created a real legacy in that it also created an amazing positive space in which a lot of networking took place and some amazing collaborations were discussed. This was the first event of its kind and the success was beyond any expectations.

The Awards Ceremony and After Party will take place in March 2016 in Central London. The venue and exact date will be announced when tickets become available in the New Year.
